It is worth mentioning that the 'swell height' as featured in the above table, does not refer to the actual wave height at the beach... Rather, the 'swell' (in feet) and 'period' (in seconds) figures given are an indication of the swell quality and range. In other words, if it states that the swell height is 8' (feet), then waves at the beach are generally considered to be around half the stated height (i.e. around 4 feet, except for very long period swells, e.g. over 12 seconds). The 'period' on the other hand, without boggling you with science, refers to the quality of the swell, and the distance over which it has travelled. The longer the period, the more well-propogated (spread out over distance) the swell is, and thus generally of better quality. Shorter periods suggest a more localised swell (generated by localised winds) which is of less quality (has not yet had enough time/distance to travel and propogate itself). However, it should also be mentioned that even when a swell of good quality is predicted, the quality of the waves at the beach are directly proportional to the local wind and tidal conditions on the day... so howling winds can destroy a perfectly good swell when it hits the coastline...
